Priory Curriculum

Intent

At Priory Primary School our intent is that all our children receive a broad and balanced curriculum which enables them to develop a wider understanding of themselves as members of the local community, as members of the United Kingdom and as citizens of the wider world.  Our curriculum is designed to promote an understanding of diversity, enable our pupils to develop empathy and care for others and to promote a sense of well-being.  Our intention is to enable the children to know more and remember more as they develop into responsible, confident, well-rounded, knowledgeable and informed world citizens of the future.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to support all staff to have a secure knowledge across the curriculum within each subject area. The knowledge in each subject is clearly mapped to ensure curriculum progression across the school along with the associated key vocabulary for each subject area.  Real life experiences are provided wherever possible to ensure our curriculum is relevant to our pupils as members of the local community as well as being citizen of the UK and the wider world.  Outdoor learning, taking advantage of being a small, rural village school, is central to our curriculum implementation and linked to our Quality First Teaching approach.  Direct, immediate feedback is given so misconceptions are addressed immediately.  Self-assessment is also part of our implementation so our pupils develop as self-reflective independent learners.

Impact

Our curriculum has been designed to ensure staff are supported in their research and delivery of the subjects taught.  Our children develop their knowledge through both teacher led activities and independent hypothesis, investigation and evaluation.  An emphasis on the teaching of key vocabulary aims to provide our pupils with the language they need to fully express their knowledge, understanding and views on the subjects taught.

The impact of our curriculum is shown through a variety of means such as summative assessment at the end of topics, quizzes to formatively assess knowledge at the start of topics as well as to also inform planning to ensure the needs of each pupil are being fully addressed.  Pupil voice, Governor monitoring, book scrutiny, national test results, as well as pictorial evidence are all triangulated to make sure our curriculum impacts positively on our pupils.
