Autumn Term 2024

We have a lot of exciting, new learning planned for the Autumn term. Here is a peep inside our curriculum.

This first half term in English, we are going to be conducting a book study of The Arrival by Shaun Tan Also, in this half of the term, we will explore the novel Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah. There will be the chance for children to examine and perform the poem Windrush Child by John Agard. In the second half of the Autumn term the class will study the writing techniques used in the novels The Promise by Nicola Davies  and The Hidden Forest by Jeannie Baker.

Mathematics this first half-term will further secure and deepen the children’s understanding of Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division along with Mental Calculations.  In the second half-term the class will focus on Fractions and Converting Measures.

 In science, our focus is on ‘Living things and their habitats’ describing how living things are classified and identifying similarities and differences in micro-organisms, plants and animals.  The children will also discover the world of fossils and how through evolution and inheritance living things have changed over time.

In History the theme will be WW2 and the Battle of Britain investigating the outbreak of the War, life on the home front, entertainment, The Battle of Britain and the role of the armed forces.

In Geography the focus is on Trade and Economics. The children find out about how goods and services are traded around the world. They will explore the UK's trade links today an in the past, finding out about goods imported and exported and the methods of transport used. Through a more detailed look at one of the UK's trade partners, the children will learn about the benefits of trading internationally, as well as the risks to this area. The children will also learn about fair trade and why it is important in a global market. 

RE studies this term will ask the class to consider 2 key questions: How and Why does Religion Bring Peace and Conflict? And How do Buddhists explain the Suffering of the World?

e- Safety will be the main focus of computing studies in the first half-term and in the second half-term the class will study how data is transferred over the internet.

The music term begins with an exploration of time signatures and moves on to listen to rhythms from around the world.  The class will learn to play polyrhythms

In Art the class will learn about Pop art through an exploration of the works and techniques Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. ‘The Seaside’ unit will teach the class how to use pen and colour, how to print, weave and make lanterns to create quality artwork that shows progression in skills. The children will also explore the work of ‘The Seaside’ artists Alfred Wallis and Hokusai.  

In PSHE, the class will learn about their rights and responsibilities at home, at school and as members of the community.  They will discuss issues such as bullying and anti-social behaviour and learn strategies to help them deal with conflict.  The class will explore British Values and take part in democratic elections to create a School Council. In the second half of the term the class will explore economics, resources, money and budgeting as well as looking at tax and debt.

In Spanish children are learning about themselves and also the weather. In the second half term the focus will be The Day of the Dead, Oher Countries and Christmas Spanish style.

Our PE days are on Monday and Tuesdays. The class will develop  their Basketball and Dodgeball skills along with expressing their creativity in Street Dance and improving their fitness through circuit training.

This term will offer pupils the opportunity to participate in a week- long school journey to PGL Bawdsey Manor where pupils will develop their independence, resilience and problem-solving skills through their participation in adventurous activities.

Pupils will also have the opportunity to participate in Bikeability where they will develop their road safety skills.
