Science

Intent

At Priory Primary School, we recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. The school is committed to providing all children with a strong understanding of the world around them to allow them to become world citizens. We aim for every pupil to have an excellent first experience of science.

We want to develop the natural curiosity of each child by promoting practical and enquiry driven science. We aim to increase children’s science capital by developing their knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences.

Enquiry skills are embedded in each scientific topic, in each year group. Children are encouraged to have empathy for and question the world around them and become independent learners. Science coverage is planned and sequenced so that new knowledge, vocabulary and skills build on what has been taught before. A range of methods are utilised to present scientific information including diagrams, labelled photographs, graphs and charts. Children are taught to develop a respect for materials and equipment with regard to their own and other’s safety. All children are encouraged to develop and use a variety of approaches (scientific enquiries) to plan and investigate the answers to relevant scientific questions.

Our goal is for children to develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery. We endeavour to ensure that the science curriculum we provide will give children the confidence and motivation to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and life experience.
