Phonics

Read Write Inc Phonics at Priory Primary School

At Priory Primary School, we employ the Read Write Inc (RWI) program to provide children with a strong foundation in English. RWI focuses on letter sounds and phonics, serving as a valuable tool in enhancing both reading and writing skills.

We believe that reading is the gateway to learning. A child who reads extensively becomes a proficient reader, capable of tackling more advanced materials. Engaging with challenging texts promotes a love for learning, driving a child to seek knowledge actively.

RWI facilitates seamless reading, allowing children to invest their energy in understanding the text. Additionally, it simplifies spelling, enabling them to concentrate on composing their thoughts in writing.

When using RWI for reading, children will:

  • Recognise that sounds are represented by written letters.
  • Acquire knowledge of 44 sounds and corresponding letter/letter groups with the help of simple picture prompts.
  • Master the skill of blending sounds.
  • Read words using the Fred Talk method.
  • Engage with lively stories featuring words they've learned, demonstrating comprehension by answering questions.

In the writing aspect of RWI, children will:

  • Learn to write the letters/letter groups representing the 44 sounds.
  • Formulate words by vocalising the sounds in Fred Talk.
  • Practice writing simple sentences.
